WWE 2K18: An Introduction The Game

With the upcoming installment of the signature wrestling video game popping up near the end of next year, the crowds have been going wild and waiting nervously for the release of WWE 2K18 – a game that will undoubtedly be as legendary as the ones that preceded it. But where did this legend start? What is the history behind the prestigious video game series that has undoubtedly revolutionized the world of wrestling video games? This article will follow where the game series WWE 2k began and how it became the game it is now.

The Arcade Age – The Sega Saturn

This ranged from the years 1983 to 1995, with a handful of amazing games released within that time. The first-ever wrestling game was released with the name Tag Team Wrestling (also known as Big Pro Wrestling). This age saw releases of video games on the initial platforms such as Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Sega Genesis, Sega 32X, Sega Game Gear, and Nintendo Gameboy. At the end of this era, WWE WrestleMania: The Arcade Game was released on PlayStation 1 in 1995.

The PlayStation 1 Age (PS1)

Starting from 1995, after the release of the pivotal game by the name of WWE WrestleMania: The Arcade Game, this time interval served as the basis of a video game series that would gather fans from all across the world. It ended near the year 2000, with six games released on PlayStation 1 almost yearly.

The PlayStation 2 Age (PS2)

Ranging from 2002 to 2004, this period was short-lived only because of the quick release of Xbox 360 in 2005 and the PlayStation 3 in 2006. The first game released on PS2 was the very well-known WWE SmackDown! Shut Your Mouth in 2002, and following that were games by the names WWE SmackDown! Here Comes the Pain and WWE SmackDown VS. Raw.

The PlayStation 3 (PS3) /Xbox 360 Age

The reign of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 can be said to be the greatest age when it comes to the release of wrestling video games on said platforms. However, PlayStation 2 remained in use and wrestling games kept releasing on it. The last wrestling game on PlayStation 2 was launched in 2011. This age saw more than eight games released on platforms including Sony PlayStation Portable, Nintendo Wii, and Nintendo DS.

The Current Age

We live in the age of the PlayStation 4 (PS4) and Xbox One, hoping to see WWE 2K18 released on said platforms very, very soon.

This release by THQ featured a great single-player experience, being one of the games that made the foundation of the WWE 2K series. The gameplay and graphics featured in the game were revolutionary and truly made an impact on the recent WWE 2K18 release. A few flaws in the otherwise fantastic game were that a few experimentations didn’t work out well and the game showed video, audio, and animation issues from time to time.

When Yuke’s, a developing organization, took over the WWE video game series, the results were highly satisfying to see. An immersive and unique approach to the story mode was noticed with the name of 30 Years of WrestleMania. The action and graphics featured in this game were smoother, more realistic, and faster. Where WWE 2K14 lacked is the competent AI and intelligent commentators since they showed flaws that made the gameplay a little bland and predictable.

Released on PS4 and Xbox One, this remarkable game introduced several new features of the gameplay such as an all-new MyCareer Mode as well as a 2K Showcase Mode, each of which added to the thrilling gameplay of the game for gamers and wrestling fans alike. But that’s not all what was introduced; WWE 2K15 allowed numerous options in customizing WWE Superstars and Divas with move-sets and entrances. You could even create your own Superstar while having control over a lot of characteristics.

Further building on the WWE 2K series, the installment released in 2015 was no less thrilling and promising. WWE 2K16 offered a magnificent performance and action-packed gameplay with minimal flaws and optimum experience. Even the AI was improved and made for a more competitive gameplay for the user. Each character in the game had distinct features and looked realistic, going for a natural look in the gaming experience with realistic story modes, fast paced move-sets, and an AI that made the bots a little more competitive.

Although a lot was expected of the WWE 2K17, there have been only a few minor changes in the gameplay as well as the graphics. The AI hasn’t seen too much change, and the pace of the game is similar as to those that came before it. All of the great features already in the predecessors of 2K17 are built upon by tweaks that make the game smoother and better in the background, opening up possibilities for experimentation and addition of better features in the upcoming installment.
